Figure 18 Plasma cell cell myeloma (A) Flame cell cell In some cases the the concentration of acidophilic substance in the the cytoplasm of plasma cells cells is excessive and produces cells cells with a a a a a a a fiery red red color The red red staining may be diffuse or or may appear appear as as as pools within the the cytoplasm or or as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a fringe of red at the the periphery This flaming appearance is is more frequently observed in glycogen rich IgA PCM (B) Sometimes plasma cells show acidophilic granule-like inclusions These azurophilic granules are morphological manifestations of an an an an abnormal secretory activity (C and D) Myeloma cells have abundant endoplasmic reticulum which may contain crystallized cytoplasmic immuno- globulin The crystalline rods may be dark red as as in in in in this case and resemble the structures observed in in in in leukemic cells of the granulocytic and monocytic series They are called Auer Auer bodies or Auer Auer rods It should be noted that these changes are not pathognomonic of PCM as as they can also be found in reactive plasma cells 153
