Incubation with the tracer for 1 h at 37oC allowed comparisons of the rate of 13C incorporation through glycolysis (+3 iso- topologues) and the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) (+2) in red blood cells from Rhesus macaques (green) and humans (red) at steady state. Rhesus macaque red blood cells showed significantly higher levels of 13C accumulation in intermediates of the glyoxylate pathway and late PPP products, but lower levels of labeled glutathione and purines.
