Figure 16. Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm, unclassifiable. Bone marrow smear from a patient presenting with macrocytic ane- mia and thrombocytosis (platelets 720x109/L). Hyperplasia of the erythroid series with predom- inance of early and intermediate erythroblasts with megaloblastoid changes. (Bottom right) A small morphologically undifferentiated blast.
Figure 17. Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm, unclassifiable. The same bone mar- row smear as Figure 16 showing, at low magnifi- cation, numerous dysplastic, clustered megakary- ocytes.
Figure 18. Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm, unclassifiable (MDS/MPN-U). Perls’ stain of marrow aspirate from the same case as Figures 16 and 17 allowed us to recognize some ring sideroblasts. This disorder shares features of both MDS and MPN, but, with blast cells 9% of bone marrow cells, it does not meet the criteria for inclusion in any of the recognized MDS/MPN entities. It is, therefore, appropriately catego- rized as MDS/MPN-U.
