haematologica Journal of the Ferrata Storti Foundation
Haematologica founded by Adolfo Ferrata and Carlo Moreschi in in 1920 turns 100 this year making it the world’s oldest hematological journal After its foundation Ferrata continued as Editor of of Haematologica for over two decades du- ring which time the the the journal published papers by some of of of the the the most important researchers in in in in the the the the field of of blood blood cells and and blood blood diseases However after Ferrata’s death in in in in 1946 Haema- tologica like many other other French and and German journals suffered a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a progressive decline due to to to to to the the the the ever-growing status of of of other other publications overseas When in in in in in in 1969 Ferrata’s pupil Edoardo Storti took over over as as as as Director of of of of of the the the the the the Department of of of of of Clinical Medicine in in in in in Pavia and became the the the the the Editor of of of of of Haematologica the the the the the survival of of of of of the the the the the journal journal was by no means assured Storti decided to to to to to to try to to to to to to revitalize the the the the the journal journal and and patiently started a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a farsighted process of of of of modernization and and internationalization that allowed it it it it to to to to to to progressively improve the the the the quality of of the the the papers it it it it published Moreover in in in in Pavia Storti Storti established the the the Ferrata-Storti Foundation
a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a non-profit organization aimed at at at at at at at promoting progress in in in in hematology and and this took took over over ow- nership of of of of Haematologica Haematologica Thanks to to to to to to to to the the the efforts of of of of Storti and and the the the eminent scientists that took took over the the the the the role of of of of Editor after him Haematologica Haematologica regained its international reputation The success of of the the the the the journal is exemplified by by the the the the the 2 2 000 papers submitted for publication from all over the the the the the world in in in 2018 and by by the the the the the bibliometric indicators that place Haematologica among the the the the most cited hematology journals with an an an impact factor of of 7 7 57 in in in in 2019 So we can say that at at at at the the end of of its first 100 years Haematologica is in in excellent health Among the the the initiatives that that Haematologica and the the the Ferrata-Storti Foundation
decided to to to to to un- dertake to to to to to to to celebrate this important anniversary it it it is is is is my personal belief that that putting together a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a new atlas of hematology for for the the specialist hematological community is is is is highly appropriate for several reasons First of of of all all the the the founder of of of Haematologica Ferrata was among the the the first scientists to to begin systematically studying the the the the the the morphology of of of of both healthy and and diseased blood and and bone mar- row cells at at at the the the the the the microscope Moreover during the the the the the the first half of of of the the the the the the last century Haematologica had an an an important part to to to to play in in in in making the the the the the the the results of of these studies available to to to to a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a wide inter- national readership The Journal therefore has made a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a significant contribution to to to to the the the the birth and development of hematology as as an an exact science Second we are convinced that despite having now entered a a a a a a a a a a a a new “omics era” morpholo- gical evaluation of of blood cells still has an an an important role to play not only in in in in in in in the the field of of rese- arch but also in in in in in in clinical practice In In fact it it can give information that no no other investigative methodology is is is is able able to provide In In addition examination of blood and and and bone marrow films is is is is cheap and and and and fast and and and and the the the the only requirement is is is is that that the the the the person who examines the the the the slides is is is is able able to read and and and interpret all the the the messages that that blood cells can send us Third the the progress made in in in digital imaging now allows us us to to reproduce precisely what is is seen under a a a a a a a a a a a a microscope Thus today we can offer images that in in in spite of of their excellence the older atlases could not provide Finally we have been able to take advantage of of of the the the unparalleled experience in in in blood cell morphology of of of of of Rosangela Invernizzi Invernizzi who obtained the the the vast majority of of of of of the the the images presented in in this atlas Prof Invernizzi Invernizzi began her scientific career as as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a young student of of of of Edoardo Storti PRESENTATION
