  to physiological hemostasis, and activation occurs in vivo always under pathological conditions, such as thrombosis, sepsis, or ARDS.40-42 This is the first study that investigated the functional contribution of PK in host defense to bacte- rial sepsis in rodent and human systems. The study shows that FXII and PK play distinct roles within the infection process. PK supports streptococcal spreading by its profib- rinolytic function, whereas, in our model, FXII did not influence bacterial dissemination.
